Underpainting for second portrait
watercolor and oils
8 x 8 x 1 inches on wooden panel
I didn't paint this from a squared photograph because working out the drawing at this stage is crucial. I spent a big chunk of the morning making sure I understood the boy's face, the bones, the light/ shadow areas. Looking at it on my screen right now I can still see things that might need readjustment but I will work them out tomorrow. I can see him looking out now so I know we are on a good path. It is a commission and therefore likeness is important, but it should be a painting above all.
