Friday's drawing and some more-

In the middle of much rain and cold we had a sunny spell on Saturday , so we went out to the beach for a walk and small discoveries.

I realise I missed Friday's post and here is the drawing, no15. I am called to change the focus of my daily drawings. My husband ,for a million and one reasons, that I can't get into here, cannot work in the garden right now so since it is in a state of great disgrace! it's my turn to put my 'green gloves on', which I definitely don't have but in this case I will pretend I do... So I thought well, how fitting, to 'reach out ' to the backyard for the next three weeks. We will see then how the project will move further. It was fitting that this drawing was called 'order begins at home' .

And this is a pencil and ink drawing ,with elements in watercolor. I started it during a life-drawing session, and finished it at home. Since, I turned forty-nine a couple of weeks ago I have been thinking a lot about time. When I was working on this I was thinking:"repeat after me: time is my friend, time is my friend, time is my friend-(... she says...)' Make believe if you have to...

Day 14- systems that work- and some that don't-

It's another late night, so this will be short.
The drawing is about systems...- suffice to say, I have been reading alot about the Greek economy...
Systems that don't work.
Enmeshed systems.
Enmeshed economies.
Systems that work.
Ecosystems.
Ecosystems that support and nourish.
Responsible systems.
Accountable systems.
Open systems and muddled systems.
Flexible systems that allow for change.
Autonomous systems.

Systems with blockages.
Constipated systems.
Systems that interconnect and stretch eachother.
There is a lot of my own life-style 'systems' that need some changing and clearing up too.
And of course when I think of systems I think of electrical circuits and blackouts and...

more light please-

Day 13- when you put that mountain under your belt-

She did. Oh Eun-sun, '...is the first woman to scale all 14 highest peaks', when she put the summit of Annapurna 'under her belt' on Tuesday. (The New York Times, Sports, pB13)

Then there is Donatella Arpaia who can be superbly glamorous and also deliciously pizza-making-able in a five-and-a-half-ton oven...(pD1)

It was a day with ups and downs, and in days like this I just like to read about women who 'get things done', who'fake it unitl they make it', and then 'make it'- who put those mountains under their belts. ..Don't you?

It's after midnight. My bed is calling out loud-

Day 12- connections and life-lines-

Precious sunlight-Rea on her way out.

The drawing today is about connections and life lines. In the science section of the New York Times today, there are two articles side by side ,pD1. One about genes, 'Finding genes in odd places' and how we basically share genes or clusters of genes, with all sort of creatures, from plants to jellyfish , to bats, to whales and so forth. Don't you love this? The interconnectedness, the way we truly all belong to connected 'life lines'.
The second article ,'17 Years later...',is about cancer survivors-patients connecting and sharing stories over the web, strengthening, encouraging and just 'witnessing' each other-a different set of life-lines but similar in the sense that the stories shared can become the cornerstones of somebody else's healing and survival.
I want to celebrate this!

I also want to cheer for a friend from Montreal who has just made a beautiful artzine- You can find it in her etsy store.

And last but not least, did you see the interview with artist Brandi Strickland in Belinda's blog?
It's excellent!

Day 10- when each and all are kings-

This is another eleven thirty post so I will have to make it short.
Ok. I cheated again! I used three articles for my 'visual thoughts'.
From the New York Times page C23.
About a 'soaring , strollable installation made from 5,000 bamboo poles situated on the rooftop of the Met. It sounds intriguing, complex, for some reason 'democratic', for some reason a little like David (from David and Goliath) building the 'tower of Babel' with the help of his friends , and a little theatrical like the 'cirque de soleil'. Great stuff to ponder on.
On the opposite part of the art world,
is the art of William Scott, of which

on page c26 the reviewr writes:"His simple , almost classical vocabulary, was derived from life's quieter moments. As seen here, they depicted pans and foodstuffs arrayed on the counter, series of cups or bowls seemingly suspended in midair..."

At the same time there is a long article about King Tut and how much more we know about him and how the more we find out about him the younger, more delicate and sickly he seems to have been.

So I was thinking about art, permanence, transience, life's small stuff that stays with us and what is it finally that truly nourishes us? Is it great ambition? Is it the small and close at hand? What is important?
And how lucky are we to be living in an era where as artists we have so many choices, almost too many! And how does democracy relate to art? If there is such a thing as democracy- maybe it changes form and content just like art does in different places and different times.
I am probably too tired to make any sense .. so I will leave you before I totally confuse you...at least the drawing is done and another week is completed!
