New watercolors and thank you Brittni!

Took a couple of new small watercolors to my favorite place in town
and thought I might take some photos of them right there, see how it would work.

I get happy at 'The Little Nest', something about the open space,
the yummy treats, the excellent coffee-
makes it very special for me- So I took Rea along-

Then we took a couple more photos in the neighborhood-

Of course I was thinking of Etsy-
So these watercolors are already up- here-

And, on another (but very special) note:
Brittni  Mehlhoff , the founder and curator of fabulous Papernstich, was interviewed
by Christina, who puts together the get the look decor, for  Etsy Blog-here-

Brittni has created a very attractive, modern and eclectic living space , using her 'great eye' to combine vintage pieces, modern furniture and beautiful artwork.
I get a very sweet mention, and it is a real thrill to see one of my watercolors
on one of her beautifully curated 'art-walls'-
Thank you so much Brittni-what a delight!!
You can check out Brittni's blog as well- here-

Emotional spaces-

Whereas the daffodils made their own emotional statement-
the complex nature of appearances-
the unpredictable season of the daffodils-
brought to an emotional landscape-

Where the titles are equal parts of the watercolors-

'I have loved flowers that fade'- and something about Mrs. Delany-

watercolor- 5 x 7 inches
I was working on this watercolor while I was listening to CBC2- and then I heard this song: 'I have loved flowers that fade', sang by Musica Intima, a group I have had the great luck to see live in Vancouver.

Later on I happened to came across this brilliant book: 'The Paper Garden'
Have you heard of Mrs.Delany (1700-1788), the inventor of mixed media collage? Apparently, at the age of 72 and through the next ten years of her life she created 985 beautiful cut-paper (hand coloured mostly) botanically correct flowers. A must see!!!

First to open-

Watercolor- 5 x 7 inches-

It really was witnessing the 'forces of Spring'! I had to 'dance as fast as I could' with my brush because the
flowers kept changing so rapidly!

Painting to the rythm of a waltz-

A long One- short Two/Three. Not perfectly so, but I believe it is a good guide to keep in mind.
Rythm has become a goal. Fluidity too. These, and a matter of factness. And to find the enduring in the ordinary.

To keep at it, until it all comes together-

Watercolor, 5x7inches (roughly 13 x 18 cm)
Last day of this pose. I was siting in almost the exact same spot as last Friday, but this time I painted with a  full colour palette.
About one third of the way through(the sessions are three hours long), I thought I had totally 'lost' it! But then as if by magic it all came together! I love this about watercolor, or any media for that matter, if you keep at it..., it yields...and gives you the sweet fruits of your labour!

Supermarket tulips-

 In watercolor-5 x 7 inches
In acrylics on canvas- 6 x 8 inches. I am trying to keep all the watercolors at 5 x 7, and all the acrylics at 6 x 8 inches. I think it points to how obsessive I can be... No matter. It works. A girl has to do what a girl has to do!
Is spring going to come soon?

Two pears in a box-

 One in watercolor.
And one in acrylic.
I managed to work from nine to six yesterday. Just a few interruptions.
 Much better.

A single watercolor, which I am actually very pleased with-
A page from last year's sketchbook. Already aware of the need for a change in direction.
Six months later, and finally getting on with it.
Clarity. Long sought.

Hope you are having a good day.

When in doubt, give yourself a challenge-

Paint something you wouldn't normally paint. Like a still life in the studio. Once in watercolor.
And once in acrylics. They don't have to be large. 5x7 inches for watercolors- 6 x 8 inches for canvas.
Then challenge yourself to make one hundred of them in one hundred working days. Or so.
Hmm.

keeping it small-

All about feet.
Some stories are all about a part of the body-feet, thighs, breasts, nose.
I have really ugly feet. The truth is I was never really troubled by that, only marginally, but probably because I love drawing them. They are fascinating forms, don't you think? And they are also so very precious, carrying all our weight around and all. And as I was doing this I thought of winged feet, which is the means of transforming the ugly feet story- by
the gift of wings.

Yes, my friends these are the silly things I think of when I am painting but then I also think about color relationships.
And line qualities.
As I was making this one I had to add a series of a's and I remembered very clearly the pleasure and the effort it took to write my first letters. I wanted to stay there.

I remember things more clearly while I am painting than at any other time. Is art then a game of hide and seek?
Seeking small memories, whispering thoughts, little voices under layers and layers of the demands of 'now'? And why should one seek them you say, why are they important after all?
Is it just a means of grasping to life?

More small blessings-

Trying to remember to use the camera.
Because the days have been so focused on my small watercolors.

There are four or five unfinished acrylics siting here and there in the studio. The watercolors are actually helping me see the unfinshed works with fresh eyes.

These here are obviously alot more abstracted which is a bit of a relief from all the story-telling. The nice thing is too that I can experiment and play with this small size and the watercolors. What I miss is the intense color and the brilliance I can achieve with acrylics and medium. But then there is also something to be said for subtlety and soft-spoken, little watercolors...
My dear friend K. asked exasperated the other day, :'how can you stay cheerul ?' I was thinking about it and tomorrow when I see her I will tell her that it's because I try to focus on the things I can do-
And I hug you-
